Today while I was shopping with my Aunt and my girls my 2 year old daughter turned to me and said, "Mommy!!! Happy Holidays!!!" and I said, "um, no Lily... we are Catholic and so we say Merry Christmas to people." Lily responded with, "but no Mommy... then we say Merry Holidays." I know that she had no idea what she was talking about but this situation made me FURIOUS.
Lily is only 2 and while she is still young, she knows that Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. She knows that Mary is the mother of Jesus Christ and she knows that Christmas is a time for family and love- and NOT presents. (Even though she gets presents.)
Chris and I were talking and we decided that we are going to make Lily give away some of her toys that she has in excess to children in need. I think sometimes parents go overboard in getting their children so much stuff and spending so much money. I know that I find myself doing it because when I was a kid I remember many Christmases where my mom was a single mother and didn't have the money to get us many things... Or especially the Christmas that my dad died and my mom was so distraught she let us just open all of our presents a week early and then had to go out and buy more. This makes me sad and I always say- "I'm allowed to spoil my children." The truth of the matter is that children don't NEED more than one present from Santa. I tend to buy more for my nieces, nephews, and siblings than I do for my own kids. I haven't even gotten much for my youngest knowing that she's so young that it doesn't even really matter because she will never even know if she gets presents or not.
I think it's funny that this year all over the radio they have, "KEEP CHRIST IN CHRISTMAS BY LISTENING TO RELIGIOUS CAROLS INSTEAD OF THE SECULAR MUSIC THEY ARE PLAYING ON THE RADIO." And yes... they run that commercial on the same station that they play all the crap Christmas music on. DUH!
